An American Cowboy

2023

Moku Hanga (waterbased woodblock printing), silkscreen, colored pencil

20 x 50 inches

description:
In an imagined playtime, the worlds of North America’s Wild West and Japan’s Mount Fuji collide. A young boy sits atop a horse as an American cowboy. He is half-Japanese and half-white. He attempts to reject his Japanese side by shooting the samurai with his pistol. He hits the horse instead--the samurai will return another day. Though each side is different, the patterns within the clothing and the horses are the same. Using both traditional Japanese woodblock techniques and western silkscreen printing, this piece is a representation of two cultural halves that both blend and clash with each other.
